Rust Oleum Corporation has been cited by OSHA for 33 Health and Safety Violations for exposing workers to Crystalline Silica which is known for causing a serious lung disease called Silicosis. The fines totaled $188,500.
One OSHA Official Stated that, “By failing to correct the violations identified, Rust-Oleum chose to ignore worker safety and exposed employees to hazards that could result in illness, injury or death.”. Hazards such as this, must be identified immediately and prevented by implementing an effective health and safety program.
OSHA also cited Rust Oleum for allowing employees to perform maintenance on machines without ensuring they could not restart during the maintenance. They added 26 more violations including the failure to protect employees from moving machine parts during maintenance and the lack of implementing programs to protect workers from these hazards.
