SSCI’s Safety With A Smile (sm) process was created by Milt Jacobs, over 2 decades ago. Milt noticed when he used positive reinforcement, home safety anecdotes and coaching to educate workers on occupational safety and health items (proactive measures), there was a smile on their faces and a change in their mindset. This differs from the traditional, “safety inspector” mentality of finding issues and creating lists for supervisors or managers to respond to and fix.
Milt then began practicing his Safety With A Smile(sm) concept!
This concept was later turned into an injury reduction system. Milt noticed that the projects he used the system with tended to have very few if any incidents. So he created the system.
The five pillars of the Safety With A Smile(sm) system include:

- Risks & Redundancy: Focusing on identifying and reducing risk is how this process begins- it is our outcome that we focus on, no matter the industry. This approach is unique in that we customize our assessments around site- specific risks and educate your team on these risks. Our belief is if the risks are controlled, your compliance items will likely fall into place. SSCI has a tool that simplifies this process.
- Strategy: Every workplace needs a safety strategy! Once you have identified your risks it is time to establish your safety strategy or your Safety Game PlanSM. Your strategy is quite different from a safety program or plan. When you have a formal safety strategy documented, it’s like having a roadmap. The strategy – or roadmap – will be different for construction and general industry, and likely even different depending upon a site or project. When you have a formal safety strategy, everyone is following the same roadmap towards the same goals.
- Communication: This is probably one of the most overlooked pieces of our system, but quite important. Communicating a message and strategy means frequent and targeted communication. Whether it’s small huddles, monthly talks, informal chats, or just being there to lend an ear, communicating often and in short bursts is the key tenet of this leg of our process.
- Education/Coaching: With risks identified, and a strategy in place, and on-going communication, education and coaching become the next step in the Safety with a SmileSM When you use consistent and positive coaching and education tools with your employees, their mindset changes.
- Recognition: Most think of recognition as giving money or gifts (pizza, etc.) for recognition. It could be, but the key thing to remember is that sometimes the easiest and simplest things work. Don’t complicate this process, keep it simple and remember that safety is intrinsic to everyone so you don’t have to give money to build mindset or change behavior. Catching people doing things right and recognizing them, particularly in front of the peers, is worth more than any gift certificate.
